Posted on

Unfortunately, Australia is a country which sometimes experiences droughts. Because of this fact, increasing numbers of Australian families are deciding to invest in slimline water tanks for their gardens. A slimline tanks allow you to store large qualities of water in a small space. However, if you are planning to install a slimline tank in your garden, it is important that you understand how to look after it. Below is a guide to everything you need to know.

Keep the tank out of direct sunlight

When installing the tank on your property, it is important that you position it so it is sheltered from exposure to any direct sunlight. If your water tank is exposed to direct sunlight, the water inside will be warmed, which creates the ideal environment for the growth of algae. Algae can create an unpleasant smell and could contaminate the water, causing it to harm the plants in your garden.

Fit a filter to the in-pipe

When connecting the in-pipe which will carry water from your gutters into the slimline water tank, it is important that you insert a filter. The gutters in your home can contain all kinds of dirt and debris such as bird droppings and fallen leaves. If you do not fit a filter to the in-pipe, all of this dirt and debris will be washed into your water tank where it will settle on the bottom. The presence of debris in the water will encourage the growth of harmful bacteria, which could create a health risk.

Wash out the tank

You should periodically wash out the tank using a combination of household bleach and water. To do this, you should drain the tank and then add a little bleach. You can then use a hosepipe to fill the tank with water. Once the tank is full, you should leave it for a few hours before carefully draining out the bleach water and rinsing the inside of the tank with clean water. Doing this will help to kill any harmful bacteria and will remove any dirt which has built up on the interior of the tank.
